What Are the Best Business Card Design Practices

Several guidelines need to be followed as you create your own custom business cards. You can hire a professional designer to make sure all the basic rules are covered. However, an ambitious entrepreneur shouldn’t be afraid to think out of the box.

Here are a few rules you can follow as you think about what to put on a business card.

  • Short, sweet, and simple. A card provides limited space to make a good and lasting impression. Only show the most important contact information and make the text readable. Your logo should stand out but not take up all the space.
  • Keep your clients in mind. While a standard business card is easy to give out and receive, the design itself should showcase what you can do. Create a look that appeals to your customers.
  • Take calculated risks. Whether you’re an industry veteran or a start up success, your company can’t risk fading into the background. Add an extra feature such as an embossed text or pick your own custom shape.

Standard Business Cards Q&A

For our fastest printing time select “1 business day.”

To find out when your business cards will arrive, input your ZIP code after selecting “Estimate Shipping Cost and Delivery Date” on our online calculator.

A:

The business card design should be placed within three lines that guide how the material is cut. Our available layout templates already include these lines. But those who want to start from scratch need to create a design within the following standard guidelines:

  • Safety Line is placed around the actual business card design, particularly your logo, contact information, etc.
  • Trim Area is the area between the bleed line and safety line. This provides additional room for cutting the business card.
  • Bleed Line refers to the edge of your business card file. The background of your design should go all the way up to this area to prevent the appearance of a white border.
A:

Shrink wrapping seals your bulk order in a clear plastic film. It protects the business cards during shipping and storage, while also organizing your items in specific quantities.

A:

Q:
What is the difference between your Soft Touch and Velvet business cards?
Asked a year ago by Rachel P.
A:

The velvet cards come with a soft velvet lamination. The velvet lamination increases the cardstock thickness from 16 to 19 pt., ensuring more long-term durability. Also, it'll highlight your name and company on a surface that is soft to the touch and luxurious in appearance. These are also referred to as suede business cards, given their suede-like texture on the printed surface.

Q:
I have ordered other business cards with the same artwork and now need to order more for a new team member but i don't have the artwork anymore. My question... if I send the name, number and email address can you use the artwork from a previous order?
Asked a year ago by Rick S.
A:

Basically, we require print-ready files on all of our printing products. Though we can certainly help you fix your file for a minimal cost with the help of our design team. Feel free to contact us for better assistance on how we can fix your file.

Q:
Can you get business cards with a glossy front with a matte back in 16 or 17pt?
Asked a year ago by Karen M.
A:

The thickest material that we can apply a coating on is 16 pt. cardstock. Also, I'm afraid the coating needs to be the same for the front and back. We'll be happy to check for alternative options for you.

Please provide us with the full specifications of your potential order so we can get you a quote. You can submit a custom quote request here: https://module.uprinting.com/quotes.

Q:
My design has a unique QR code for each business card. 1000 pcs, front and back, in full color. I can send you an individual design file with the unique QR. How can I place my order, and what do you suggest?
Asked a year ago by John
A:

We print one design per item. Hence, if the artwork has different designs, information, and QR codes on each business card design (front and back), we can order each individually.

You may place the order by choosing the specifications on the website and uploading each artwork per item. Proof may also be requested for you to see how it may look before we print it.

Q:
Is the gloss only on one side of the business card or both front and back?
Asked a year ago by Joseph B.
A:

We use different cardstocks where the gloss option is available. You may choose either 16 pt or 14 pt cardstock. Kindly choose the front and back printing should you wish both sides of your artwork to have a gloss coating.
