How to Create an Effective Window Decal

Add and remove elements based on your main message.

What is the first thing customers need to know after seeing your window decal? Is it your store hours? The latest promo deal for deliveries or a brand-new product line? Your design should lead and clearly show this information.

If the decal is not informative, then display a call-to-action. Window decals made of perforated adhesive vinyl can encourage store traffic with a sale or freebie giveaway.

Keep everything clear and readable.

A simpler design catches more attention. Anything too busy will lose your customer in one glance. Use a font that’s easy to read and print in a size that can be seen from afar. Make sure the visual elements and any additional images do not distract them from your main message.

Stay consistent with your brand.

Planning to display a full-color ad made of perforated adhesive vinyl? Use your company’s brand book as a guide. Small businesses can review their previous ads and messaging to see which colors they consistently use. This sustains the brand association made with every promotion your company displays.

“While the final product is acceptable, it isn’t as brilliant as I was hoping. Apparently a slight shadow was in the proof photo and carried over much darker on the final decal. I wish it would have been more evident that the shadow would have been so obvious after printing. If shipping were not so high at almost 3 times the cost of the decals, I would try again with a much clearer photo. For now I am stuck with decals that are just so-so. Not worth trying again without a high quality original.”

“I didn't realize the vinyl would be perforated. When it is removed from the backing the images get a little distorted. Would it be possible to get this done on a solid peace of vinyl? Not asking to have them redone for free. Would be willing to pay. Order Number: #6937618”

Q:
I am looking to have a full image on the front windows of a storefront, but I want them to be translucent. Is this the correct product for that? Do I need to set up files differently to account for that?
Asked 4 months ago by Annie
A:

The better option would be the Window Clings. There are examples there of the type of material you want (Making Only the Background Transparent, Make Everything Transparent, ect). If you have portions that you need to be solid (printed on White Ink) so it will stand out more, you need to indicate this in your file using layers. To be sure, ask for a proof before making payment so you can clarify how these will be printed and ensure your instructions are followed before it goes to print.

Q:
I am using this for outside a business to advertise a coming soon. I am going to put it on the outside directly onto the window. I ordered a white opaque decal. Is this the right thing to order? I want it to be easy to put up
Asked 5 months ago by onika
A:

For the Window Decals, we don't have an opaque material option. We only have clear or white static cling. Either of these would be a good choice as they are removable. Select a clear background if you wish for passers by to see the inside of the window as all areas without print will be clear. If you select a White Static cling, all clear areas will have a white overlay so it won't be see-through. We can make areas opaque if requested meaning all clear areas will have an opaque finish.

Q:
Can we turn a photo into a decal
Asked 7 months ago by Junior J.
A:

Yes, that is possible. We will give the print area a white ink base so your image can appear clearly.  It's important your image is sharp, has the correct dimensions for your desired size with resolution of between 250-300 DPI.

Q:
Will these stick to laptops and water bottles?
Asked 7 months ago by Jane
A:

The Window Decal will stick to a smooth surface but they are not designed for those applications. If you need removable stickers for a lap top, please check out our Custom Labels and then select "Rolls". For the material, select  "Removable White BOPP".  Our Water Bottle Labels use a 4 Mil White Vinyl Material that would be more suitable with a permanent adhesive.

Q:
Hi- I am trying to design a window decals for people with pets, in case of an emergency, they can let first responders know how many pets are in the home. Are you able to write on these with permanent marker?
Asked 7 months ago by Andrea C.
A:

The material for Wall Decals may not be the best for using a permanent marker on as they may dry longer and smudge. We encourage you to take a look at our Permanent Decals and Dry Erase Adhesive Vinyls. If you need them to be attached to a glass surface, you may use the Wall Decals but you should incorporate a white background for the portion you need to write on.
